International RiverSymposium

Vienna and on-line | 27-30 November 2022

Hosted by the International RiverFoundation, the International Riversymposium was first held in Brisbane in 1998 and provides a platform for river managers, policy developers, scientists, consultants, NGOs and community organisations to share knowledge and innovative ideas on all aspects of river and water management.

By facilitating partnerships between key stakeholders, the International Riversymposium celebrates the environmental, economic and social value of rivers across the globe. The symposium provides an international forum for examining best practice in river and watershed management.

Over the years, the International Riversymposium has hosted thousands of delegates from all over the world. Whether through the RiverExpo, plenary sessions, or the Riverprize Gala Dinner and social program, Riversymposium provides the opportunity to network with river and water management experts on a global scale.

AWP at the International RiverSymposium

AWP is a workshop sponsor at the event, and will launch the AWP and World Bank case studies and synopsis on ‘ValuingWater: The Australian Perspective – Lessons from the Murray-Darling Basin‘.

Water in the Murray-Darling Basin is examined through the lenses of the economy, the environment and Australia’s First Nations, helping policy makers to improve water-related outcomes in other country contexts. Australia’s largest river system provides valuable lessons that can inform good international practices.

Accurately valuingwater helps us reveal the costs and benefits of different actions—or lack of action—and how these costs and benefits are distributed across users, uses, time and space. Understanding different types of value— economic, environmental and cultural—leads to more informed decision making, from the household level to governments that make decisions that affect industries, communities and the environment. This is increasingly important around the globe in the face of growing scarcity of water resources due to climate change and population growth.

The session will be live-streamed on Wednesday, 30 November at 9:00PM AEDT on the International RiverSymposium website.
