AWP’s engagement at COP 27

The 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) to assess progress in dealing with climate change will take place from 6–18 November 2022.

165 signatory countries will gather in Sharm El-Sheikh for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27), to progress the Paris Agreement and action to address climate change. Following the latest IPCC report recommendation to have scientific knowledge, cultural values, traditional and local knowledge alongside to play a role in effective adaptation, AWP has been engaging with partners to share Australian perspectives and experiences on this matter including cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

As an active member of the international water and climate community, at COP27, AWP will contribute to global knowledge of how community and traditional knowledge can be incorporated into water management planning for climate adaptation, drawing on practice from the Indo-Pacific region as well as Australia. AWP’s contribution builds on our current work focused on bringing together Australian and regional experience of community and traditional knowledge into climate resilient water planning. This includes the water and climate stories we are sharing with the water for development community, our involvement at the World Water Week, and the ‘Sharing Water and Climate Stories’ – Dialogue Series.

In collaboration with the Water for Women fund under Australia Water Partners for Development, AWP are co-leading the organisation of the Water, Energy and Climate nexus Day at the Water Pavilion.

Additionally, AWP is convening events at the Australian Pavilion, Water Pavilion, Climate Action Hub and Resilience Hub and is working with International Partners ICIMOD to deliver an event at the Cryosphere Pavilion, with full details linked below.

Together with Australian Partners Phil Duncan from Alluvium and Hon. Karlene Maywald from Maywald Consultants Pty Ltd, AWP Strategy and Partnerships Lead Katharine Cross and Senior Partnerships and Impact Officer Lucía Gamarra will be part of the Australian delegation and will deliver the sessions below.  You can follow Katharine and Lucía on Twitter for live updates!
