Russell Merz is the Managing Principal of CDM Smith’s Australian Water business, a principal hydrotechnical engineer, and a business leader. Over the past 30 years, he has undertaken and contributed to multi-disciplinary projects in over 40 countries in five continents. His focus is on hydrology, integrated water management, risk assessment, water resources resiliency and water stewardship. Russell has participated in Steering Committees, Expert Review Panels, and risk review as a subject matter expert.
Russell has a broad perspective and understanding of global business and multi-cultural diversity from project work in over 35 countries, and from living and working in five countries. Russell has held positions in government, industry and consulting. He was responsible for establishing business operations in India, leading the Asian mining business, progressing mergers and acquisitions in Asia, and integration of acquisitions in Singapore and Hong Kong. Past Board positions include director of companies in Singapore, India, and New Caledonia.
Russell holds a degree in Bio-resource Engineering from UBC in Canada and a master’s degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering (Soil and Water) from North Carolina State University, USA. He is also a Fellow and Chartered Professional Engineer (Civil and Environmental) with Engineers Australia, a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ), and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
