Myanmar World Water Day Celebration

The Australian Water Partnership is building a strategic collaboration with the Government of Myanmar for integrated water resource management in the Ayeyarwady River Basin.

In support of this collaboration, the AWP is an international sponsor of the Myanmar World Water Day Celebration being held in Naypyitaw on 13–14 March.  AWP CEO Gary Jones will be attending the 2-day event, prior to the first meeting of the Joint Committee under the recently signed MoU between the Government of Myanmar and the Australian Government.

Gary will be speaking on the topic: ‘Murray-Darling Basin – Lessons from Australian experiences with basin planning in the Murray-Darling and other river basins’.

Other Australian participants include Session Chair, Dr John Dore, Senior Water Resources Specialist, Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT), and Speaker Dr Robert Carr, CEO eWater Solutions, presenting ‘Water accounting in large river basins: building an evidence base for integrated planning’.

Background

The National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) was established by the Presidential Decree on 25 July 2013. Since 2014, NWRC has organised annual World Water Day Celebrations in Myanmar with two main objectives. The first objective is to increase efficiency of water sector performance for poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Myanmar and the second is connect and cooperate with the international world water community. 2016 WWD is the third time that Myanmar celebrates the World Water Day. This year celebration has two parts: (i) a Pre-conference on 13 March, which consists of professional level sessions with the theme ‘Ayeyarwady – Sustaining the river, stimulating development’ and (ii) National and Political level sessions with the theme ‘Myanmar Water Sector Reform – IWRM, DRR and WASH, Integration in Action for Sustainable Development’.

Day 1: Myanmar World Water Day Pre-conference

Theme: Ayeyarwady – Sustaining the river, stimulating development
  • Session 1:  Strengthening cooperation and integrating river basin planning
  • Session 2:  Baselines, data and building the evidence for basin planning
  • Session 3:  Creating an Enabling Environment for the IWRM implementation

Day 2: Myanmar World Water Day Celebration

Theme: Myanmar Water Sector Reform – IWRM, DRR and WASH, Integration in Action for Sustainable Development
  • Session 1:  Implementation of IWRM in Myanmar – call for Integration
  • Session 2:  Implementation of DRR in Myanmar – call for Integration
  • Session 3:  WASH Activities within the scope of NWRC – call for Integration

Objectives

  1. To increase general awareness on water sector reform across the country and across sectors.
  2. To consult with the general public, NGOs, Media, Private Sector and Government Agencies about the approach and expected outputs of the Ayeyarwady Integrated River Basin Management (AIRBM) Project.
  3. To consolidate and generate active participation from every corner of Myanmar in ongoing water sector reform.
  4. To facilitate the water diplomacy dialogues in the Myanmar’s water sector to achieve Post-2015 SDGs in 2030.
