Fluvio Pty Ltd is a leading provider of hydrological data management, water resource monitoring and analytics, and environmental consulting services. With a strong presence in the Pacific region (including a full-time staff based in Solomon Islands), Fluvio specialises in developing innovative, fit-for purpose solutions for water resource management, climate resilience, and data-driven decision-making.
Our team comprises highly skilled hydrologists, data scientists, and environmental specialists who bring extensive experience in water resource monitoring, cloud-based analytics, and stakeholder engagement. We are committed to collaborative, locally-led development, ensuring that our solutions are sustainable, accessible, and tailored to the unique needs of our partners.
Fluvio has internationally recognised expertise in coastal water and sediment quality assessments, coastal pollutant transport and hydrodynamics, numerical modelling, hydrology, groundwater and autonomous environmental monitoring. In addition to traditional environmental consulting services, Fluvio also has an in-house technology development team that are leading the development of innovative camera based hydrological monitoring tools.
Project 1
Solomon Water – Water Quality Monitoring
Description – Fluvio is currently assisting Solomon Water to implement real time water quality monitoring within the catchments of Honiara. The project has included deployment of remote field monitoring systems, catchment mapping using GIS and field studies (to identify upstream water sources and areas at risk of sediment runoff from local vegetation loss and steep slope gradients) and dye tracing activities (to better understand catchment connectivity). This has ensured that exceedances of turbidity within the reticulation system can be quickly identified and managed by a mobile alert system and real time web-based dashboard. The project will assist Solomon Water with its capacity to manage and monitor water quality within its system and deliver cleaner water to its consumers.
Project 2
Advance Queensland – Next generation autonomous water monitoring system for managing flood and water quality risks for Queenslanders
Description – Fluvio has secured an Advance Queensland grant to refine its computer vision stream gauging system (CVSG) to become a commercially available product. The project will refine the existing ‘blue box’ camera prototype to establish a cost-effective method for measuring water flows and velocity. This significantly improves the quantity of data collected and reduces safety risks associated with traditional methods for plotting hydrographs The CVSG will ensure that water resources can better managed and tracked through local waterways and provides policy makers with the information they require to track and manage water resources within their catchments. To date the deployment of CVSG systems is ongoing across waterways in QLD in alignment with project partners.
Project 3
CLEAN REEFS: a dynamic pollution mapping and risk assessment tool for global coral reefs
Description – Fluvio is contributing to development of a dynamic pollution mapping and risk assessment tool that can be used to assess coral reef exposure to pollution in an area of interest, identify the watersheds where pollution originates, and run management and coastal development scenarios to estimate how exposure of coral reefs to pollution changes. On an organizational and financial level, our tool will be backed by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in the long-term, who will actively use it for pollution management projects across many of their 13 coral reef country programs.
Project 4
Flood Event Sampling Program
Description – Fluvio has undertaken sampling across water column profiles, during the ascending limb, peak flow and descending limb of flood events. The sampling program has been supported by deployment of Fluvio’s computer vision stream gauging system (CVSG) which provides improved estimates of stream discharge during flood events. The CVSG is shown to successfully capture flow discharge estimates during peak flows and the descending limb of flood events. This effectively fills out the hydrograph in a safe and time effective manner. As current the project is helping to define the existing nutrient dynamics of the Brisbane River and improve the accuracy of sediment and nutrient load estimates of flood events.
Project 5
Brisbane River Nutrient Study
Fluvio has supported Urban Utilities (UU) to model nitrogen dynamics in the Bremer and Brisbane River estuaries. The project is focused on sediment contributions to nitrogen cycling which is a key area of uncertainty in current efforts to model nitrogen dynamics across Southeast Queensland. By identifying nitrogen dynamics UU will be better positioned to manage its assets and ensure that its operations have minimal impact on existing nitrogen cycling. This work not only provides a snapshot of the existing system but contributes to understanding drivers of health within the underlying waterway.
Project 6
Dams and Weir GHG Desktop Study
Fluvio has completed desktop GHG assessments to assess the emission of GHGs (primarily methane) from dams and weirs (Grinham et al. 2022). This is a key emission pathway for water storages and must be understood to achieve net zero emission targets.
