JBP Pacific Scientists and Engineers Pty Ltd

JBP is a group of chartered engineers and scientists who have worked on a range of projects in Australia, the Pacific, and internationally on projects with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. We focus on weather and climate change risk management, in particular coastal, flooding and water-related risks. We apply an integrated approach, using technology, detailed modelling, science and engineering to consider structures, operations, weather-risks and response. Our tools are used to reduce weather-related impacts, support infrastructure design, offer advance warning of disruptions, and reduce the cost of delays.
Our core skills include:
• Statistical analysis of extreme weather, including waves, sea levels, rainfall IFDs, joint and multi-variate probability.
• The development of detailed numerical models for waves, currents, tides, extreme sea levels, erosion, shoreline recession, rainfall, flows, flooding, detailed hydraulics (CFD), and dam breaks.
• The development of coastal and flood forecasting systems, for early warnings, alerts and notifications, and sophisticated metocean forecasting tools for shipping, ports and marine construction.
• Design of coastal structures, including seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, beach nourishment schemes.
• Port management, including dredging, detailed modelling, and engineering design.
• Training and capacity building for coastal, flood and climate change risks.

• Coastal Management: Preparation of coastal hazard management plans and adaptation plans.
• Shoreline Erosion: Estimation of sediment budgets, geomorphologic assessment, long-term and short term erosion modelling
• Coastal modelling: Modelling of waves, currents, tides, seas, coastal erosion and shoreline evolution.
• Ports and harbours: Numerical modelling to support dredge management, seiching, wave overtopping
• Climate change adaptation and resilience: Large-scale risk assessments, prioritisation, management and investment planning

    Engaged by the World Bank. Personnel: Daniel Rodger. A project to identify the key flood and coastal flood risks to the city, which were quantified for current and future climate scenarios. A strategic plan was produced detailing the options to manage these risks. A key component was capacity building within the Ministry of Public Works (which is responsible for roads, water supply, drainage, highways and government buildings) on flood and coastal risk assessment. Position held: Technical review and out-of-country support (Coastal and flood specialist).,Engaged by Arup, for the Government of Papua New Guinea funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This assignment is part of Port Moresby Sewage System Upgrade Project (POMSSUP). Tasks include: Estimation of ambient and extreme coastal conditions. Analysis of tide levels, extreme sea levels, currents and wave conditions at the study site. Statistical assessment of cyclones (probability of central pressure, radius to max winds, sustained wind speed), wind field and numerical modelling using Delft3D. Statistical analysis of wave conditions, and wave transformation modelling,Engaged by JBA Risk Management. A post-event flood risk mapping assessment for the Category 4 Cyclone Debbie, which lead to widespread flooding to Queensland. Tasks included prediction of coastal flooding using Delft3D, through analysis of cyclone track data, mapping of 750kms flooding.,Engaged by the Brisbane Airport Corporation. A flood risk study for the Brisbane Airport to support the detailed design of earthworks to achieve the required standard of protection. The project considered coincident flood, rainfall and coastal surge risks. The site was assessed in terms of its 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (1 in 100-year) flood risk from fluvial (flow), pluvial (rainfall) and coastal surge flooding. The project used a coupled MIKE FLOOD (1D/2D) model to incorporate upstream flows, downstream tidal pus surge conditions and direct rain-on-grid modelling to understand the risk of coincident events.,Engaged by JBA Risk Management. Personnel: Daniel Rodger. This study estimates the 100-year and 500-year skew surge levels at two locations, Tanjong Pagar and Sembawang, in Singapore. Tasks included technical review of the methodology used, and outcomes.,Engaged by the Asian Development Bank. Personnel: Daniel Rodger. Daniel was a part of the UK-based support for this Climate Resilient Coastal Protection and Management Project, delivered through an international consortium with FCG ANZDEC, JBA Consulting, CTRAN Consulting and CLIMsystems. The project strengthened the resilience of the Indian coast, coastal infrastructure and communities to the adverse impacts of climate change
