Tonkin + Taylor‘s water expertise spans hydrology, hydrogeology, water supply and quality, irrigation and drainage systems, dam engineering, river science, catchment management, ecology, stormwater and groundwater management, wastewater treatment, asset management, strategic planning, digital solutions, and programme delivery. We also have a highly capable geotechnical, coastal, environmental and civil engineering team, who have successfully delivered projects throughout the Indo-Pacific for over 40 years.
Our customised solutions include investigations, feasibility studies, environmental effects assessments, integrated design, construction supervision, commissioning, and operational monitoring. We also have expertise in extreme risk analysis and projection modelling, climate change adaptation and mitigation planning, and natural hazard resilience.
We are committed to proactive, long-term approaches to water stewardship to ensure future water security, the protection of public health, and the preservation of precious water environments.
Rarotonga Groundwater Study, Cook Islands
Tonkin + Taylor was engaged by the Ministry of Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) to construct a number of groundwater monitoring wells around Rarotonga and to undertake selected groundwater investigations as part of the Rarotonga Groundwater Investigation and Monitoring Project.
Funafuti Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Tuvalu
Tonkin + Taylor’s scope of work includes geotechnical field investigations of major structures and the pipeline network, including borehole drilling, installation of piezometers, UXO clearance, and test pit investigations, with sample materials air freighted to New Zealand for lab testing. It also includes analysis and report preparation, comprising development of geotechnical models, seismic parameter assessments, liquefaction susceptibility examination, geotechnical parameters derivation, and foundation options evaluation. The comprehensive report based on these findings will support preliminary design and highlight advice for the detailed design and construction phase.
Manase Beach Enhancement, Samoa
In December 2012 Cyclone Evan crossed Samoa causing widespread damage and significant economic and infrastructural losses. This project reviewed existing damage and potential future damage and developed short- medium- and long-term options to improve resilience considered requirements for tourism amenities. Preferred options of beach replenishment and offshore control structures were designed, approvals gained and constructed.
Huoi Quang Hydropower Dam, Vietnam
The 520 MW Huoi Quang Hydropower Project is sited on the Mu River in Northern Vietnam. Tonkin + Taylor provided the Dam Safety Panel with its main objective to review and advise the client on matters relative to dam safety and other critical aspects of the dam, reservoir and downstream areas of the project, including implications from a dam break event. This included technical review of the hydropower, engineering geology, hydrology, hydraulics, structural and civil aspects of the headworks through design and construction via six site visits/missions and associated reporting.
Sarakata Flood Management Plan and Early Warning Systems, Vanuatu
Tonkin + Taylor carried out a review of the existing Sarakata Flood Mitigation guidelines, which included the evaluation and identification of gaps in flood risk management and early warning systems (EWS) for the Sarakata catchment. This project also included development of flood and emergency management scenarios and simulations for provincial stakeholders, and the institutionalization of the guidelines and EWS into provincial and national frameworks.
Affordable Coastal Protection Guidance, PRIF
Tonkin +Taylor carried out a comprehensive engineering study aimed at identifying cost-effective strategies for coastal protection and development. The initiative builds upon existing knowledge, striving to establish innovative solutions that optimise the use of local materials and labour while minimizing reliance on imported goods and equipment. The report systematically catalogues and evaluates current approaches to shoreline protection in the Pacific region, employing laboratory simulations to validate key recommendations. The study culminates in the development of technical resilience guidelines, offering a detailed overview of the design process. A subsequent 2023 project developed guidance for monitoring and maintenance of coastal protection works in Pacific Island Countries including reviews of existing approaches, development of visual inspection forms and asset management database and in-country and online training.
