University of Victoria

Victoria University achieved university status in 1990, but our preceding institutions date back to 1916. We are one of Australia’s few dual-sector universities. Today, we have more than 46,000 enrolled higher education, and vocational education and training students studying on our campuses.

VU is ranked in the world’s top 2% (THE World University Rankings 2016/2017) and firmly positioned in the QS World University Rankings 2016/2017. As one of 39 public universities in Australia, graduates can be assured their qualification from VU is being awarded from a university operating in a world-class education system.

As well as about 5000 international students studying our courses in Australia, we have more than 9400 international students studying VU courses at overseas partner institutions, mainly in Asia. Being a dual-sector university means that our students can easily pathway from vocational education to higher education – such as from a certificate or diploma course through to an undergraduate degree or even a postgraduate qualification by coursework or research.

Water is a key focus on research for Victoria University and it is managed through the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation.

Water Treatment – .VU researchers are expert in membrane processes for water and wastewater treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, reuse and desalination, as well as novel biological processes such as anammox.

Water Resource Management – research focus areas are: water resources planning and management, urban water cycle management, river water quality management and modeling, climate change impact on water yields and hydrological modeling

Social and behavioral aspects of water management with research interests in: increasing knowledge of behavioral influences on water consumption within the various socio economic segments, testing of behavioral change models that will sustain current and future water saving requirements, focus on residential socio economic segments to assess water related behaviors that exist in the respective segments and key influences on those behaviors, increasing consumer acceptance of recycled water, risk perception in relation to differing delivery systems of recycled water, advise on public trust in the authorities to ensure quality control, overcoming public resistance to potable use of recycled water, including common response of ‘disgust’, providing tools needed for water utilities to better understand and address public perceptions and public concerns regarding indirect drinking water recycling, developing best practices for communication strategies and community engagement, and taste tests.

Ecology expertise directed at understanding the fundamental ecology of key aquatic organisms and major aquatic ecosystems, by focusing on life-history traits of aquatic species, inter-species interactions and the role of environmental filters, developing robust techniques to quantitatively assess the impacts of human activities on aquatic systems, develop and trail approaches for ameliorating impacts and improving the ecological condition of degraded aquatic system.
