Moroka Pty Ltd provides local, national and international advice on the management of water, rivers and catchments. The Directors, Dr John Tilleard and Dr Tony Ladson, are specialists in hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology.

John Tilleard specialises in river management policy and practice including river restoration, environmental flows, catchment and waterway management and investigation, design and supervision of water resources management projects. He has 40 years national and international consulting, research, and teaching experience. Development and international assignments include water related projects in Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Romania, South Africa, and USA. John participated in Australian Government delegations to Taiwan and South Korea and has coordinated and taught Masters and Graduate Certificate level courses in Civil Engineering Hydraulics and Catchment and Waterway Management at the University of Melbourne.

Tony Ladson has 30 years’ experience in hydrology and river management and has worked on projects throughout Australia and in the US, Taiwan and PNG. He has a PhD from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota. As well as being a Director of Moroka Pty Ltd, he is an adjunct Associate Professor at the Victoria University, an honorary fellow in the Waterway Ecosystem Research Group at the University of Melbourne and was previously a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University.

Projects

  • My Thuan Bridge
    Investigate, design and implement erosion control works for the My Thuan bridge, Mekong River, Vietnam  o Bank retreat of 6-35 m/yr threatened bridge stability o Bank revetment was expensive, damaged the land-water interface and was unsuited to dominant channel migration processes. o Submerged permeable groynes were proposed as an alternative.  o Physical modelling was used to optimize design  o 3 years of post-construction monitoring confirmed velocity reduction achieved by the groynes.  o Recent observation, 10 years after construction, suggests the works are performing well. o Formal monitoring is now needed to ratify performance and confirm applicability to other sites.  More at: http://bit.ly/2Unjq6o
  • River stabilisation at bridge sites in east Timor
    The Asian Development Bank implemented emergency road rehabilitation works throughout East Timor. A particular issue was damage to bridges. This project involved field inspections, provision of advice on river management issues at bridge sites, and general guidance for future river stabilization works. The main problems observed were undermining of bridge abutments and upstream river alignment issues leading to erosion caused by flow impinging directly on the bridge abutment or the bridge approach. Proposed solutions included protection of bridge abutments from scour and alignment training upstream of bridges.
  • Management of mining related sediment in PNG
    Moroka has undertaken several assignments related to the analysis and management of mining related sediment. This includes work on the following mines and projects in PNG: Simberi, Porgera, Ok Tedi, Frieda River, Yandera, Tolukuma, Misima, Wafi-Golpu, and Ramu River. This work has included field assessments, analysis, modelling and reporting. Work has been undertaken as part of mine planning, mine expansions, environmental impact statements and environmental assessments. Moroka has also developed emergency response strategies following accidental environmental impacts on rivers in The Philippines and Romania.
  • Prediction of river alteration in response to changed flows
    Moroka has particular expertise in geomorphic assessment and prediction of river response to flow changes. Projects include an environmental assessment of geomorphic and sediment transport consequences of a proposed water harvesting project on the Cache La Poudre River, Colorado, USA. This project was undertaken for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Extensive work has also been undertaken on the Murray River (Hume to Yarrawonga) and Goulburn River downstream of Lake Eildon.
  • Water quality
    Moroka has undertaken extensive analysis of water quality data for tributaries to Port Phillip and Westernport. This has included assessing quality, infilling data, dealing with censored data (above and below detection limits), and estimating loads of nutrients, sediments and metals to receiving waters. Time series modelling has been used to highlight trends. In addition to nutrients and pollutants, work has been undertaken on the dissolved oxygen levels including trajectories and causes of low DO.
  • Moroka has experience, expertise and qualifications in training including: development and academic leadership of a Graduate Certificate in Catchment and Waterway Management at the University of Melbourne; short courses for professionals in flood modelling, flood management, hydrology, hydraulics and data analysis; graduate and advanced undergraduate teaching in hydraulics, hydrology, urban stormwater management, and student design projects.
