Murray-Darling Basin Authority

The Murray─Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent expertise-based agency responsible for the implementation and ongoing review of the Murray─Darling Basin Plan, and the management of the River Murray system. We work with a range of partners – state governments, Australian government agencies, local land and water managers and community interest groups – with the aim to achieve a healthy and productive working basin.
This work is important to the wellbeing and future of the businesses, people, plants and animals that rely on the Basin’s water resources.
We are appointed under the Water Act 2007 and our parent agency is the Australian Government’s The MDBA’s work includes:
• The ongoing implementation and review of the Basin Plan, including overseeing compliance with the plan and reporting on its progress
• Operating the River Murray system on behalf of partner governments to deliver water to users
• Measure and monitor the quality and quantity of the Basin’s water resources
• Support, encourage and conduct research into the basin’s water resources and ecosystems
• Engage and educate the Australian community (particularly in the Basin) about the Basin’s issues, challenges and actions required to achieve these tasks.

Projects

  • World Water Week - August 2015
    The MDBA participated in World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden from 23-28 August 2015. We held two seminars: Complexities with water pricing and governance and Establishing a market for water. The MDBA also hosted a corporate booth over the week-long conference and the Australian Ambassador to Sweden hosted a reception for Australian delegates and key stakeholders. The MDBA collaborated with Botswana, Brazil, Phillipines, OECD and the African Development Bank.
  • Riversymposium - September 2015
    The MDBA participated in Riversymposium, Brisbane from 20-23 September 2015. We held two seminars: Women in Rivers and Large River Basin Forum. The MDBA also hosted a corporate booth over the three day event. The MDBA collaborated with the Mekong River Commission, Myanmar and Brazil.
  • Pakistan Delegation - June 2015
    The MDBA met with a Pakistan delegation to discuss transboundary river systems, the Basin Plan and the use of modelling information in forumulating the plan and governance.
  • Indian Delegaion - February 2015
    The MDBA met with an Indian delegation.
  • India Water Week - January 2015
    The MDBA participated in Water Week in India. The MDBA provided a presentation on river basin planning.
  • United States 2014
    Tony McLeod, MDBA General Manager Water Planning, was an awardee of the Fulbright Scholarship inn 2014.
